Abbas Akhavan Wins Sobey Art Award

Abbas Akhavan, past and upcoming artist-in-residence with Fogo Island Arts, has won the 2015 Sobey Art Award. Congratulations, Abbas!

Founded in 2002, the Sobey Art Award is presented annually to a Canadian artist age 40 or under who has exhibited in a public or commercial art gallery within 18 months of being nominated.

The members of the Sobey 2015 curatorial panel were Michelle Jacques, chief curator at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria; Meeka Walsh, curator and Border Crossings editor; Crystal Mowry, curator of Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery; Marc Lanctôt, curator at the Musée d¹Art Contemporain de Montréal; David Diviney, curator of exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia; and guest juror Josée Drouin-Brisebois, curator of contemporary art at the National Gallery of Canada.
