Fogo Island Forecast
Fogo Island Gallery
Deadline for submissions: May 14, 2021
Fogo Island Arts is delighted to announce a Call for Submissions for an exhibition of works by Fogo Island and Change Islands community members.
Locally based artists, craft practitioners, writers, musicians, performers and other creators are invited to submit proposals of new or existing works for the group exhibition Fogo Island Forecast, to be presented at the Fogo Island Gallery in Fall 2021.
Art and culture deal with social developments. They refer to the past and stretch into the future. They can tear open reality, deconstruct and reassemble it in coded form as a way to hold up a mirror to society.
In our current moment, time seems surreal and decelerated. Psychologically speaking, being unable to know what the future will bring is hard to tolerate. The effects of the pandemic show that there is a social need for culture and art. What kind of content can we create? How can we deal differently with the cultural infrastructure that we have? We need to place ourselves differently within society. We need to tell new stories about ourselves. Fogo Islands Arts is and can be a place for writing new stories together.
Fogo Island Forecast aims to consider the positive potential within our current moment of crisis, based on the original meaning of the word “crisis” that signals an opportunity for decisive change.
Proposed works in any medium may address such concerns as our individual and collective future on the island in a post-pandemic world; our connections to global currents and perspectives; the soft power of art and culture; the relationships between economy and community; and other responses to the current situation.
All submissions will be juried by Strategic Director Nicolaus Schafhausen and the FIA team, and selected works will be presented at the Fogo Island Gallery, located in the Fogo Island Inn. The exhibition will also be available for online viewing on FIA’s new website. FIA is an initiative of Shorefast, a registered Canadian charity with the mission to build economic and cultural resilience on Fogo Island.
Eligibility: Submissions are open to anyone currently residing on Fogo Island or Change Islands. Work in all mediums will be accepted for consideration, from artworks and craft pieces to writing, performance and online presentations. Please take into account the size of the Fogo Island Gallery and the shared nature of a group exhibition when submitting proposals for physical works. Creators of all levels and backgrounds are welcome to apply; previous exhibition experience is not required.
Submissions must include:
• An artwork/creative proposal (500 words max.): tell us what you would like to exhibit or present, and why you think the work fits the theme of the exhibition.
• A bio and artist statement (500 words max.): tell us about yourself and your art or creative work.
• Work samples (10 images/2 videos/3 writing samples max.): show us the work you would like to include. If it has yet to be made, provide examples of past work and/or any preparatory sketches, links, writing samples, etc.
• Any other relevant details, such as how the work should be presented or displayed and whether special equipment is required.
Successful applicants will be offered a modest fee towards the production and/or presentation of their work. Please note that production of new works is not expected unless your submission is selected. Final physical works must be delivered by August 20, 2021. Limit of 2 proposed works per submission.
