Call for Applications: Emerging French Artist Residency
Fogo Island Arts is accepting residency applications from emerging French artists. This residency aims to foster opportunities for cultural exchange between Canada and France and offers a unique experience to French artists at an early stage in their career.
Recipients will work on Fogo Island for two months immersed in the distinctive landscape and culture of rural Newfoundland.
The award funds travel costs, studio space, private accommodations, a vehicle for on-island use, and a stipend for food and gas.
Application Criteria
Applications are welcome from emerging artists. To be eligible for the residency artists must be currently living in France or French territories and hold French citizenship.
The residencies being offered are available are on these dates:
- June 1 - July 31, 2026 Squish Studio
- July 2 - August 31, 2026 Long Studio
- August 1 - September 31, 2026 Tower Studio
Successful candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- 25 years of age or older
- Valid driver’s license
- Proof of French citizenship
- Proof of residency in France or French territories
- English language proficiency
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted using the SlideRoom online portal. Step-by-step application instructions are available on the portal.
Applicants will receive a confirmation email once their application has been completed.
Applicants will be asked to complete:
- Application form
- Brief artistic statement and description of a project to be developed during the residency (500 words maximum)
- Short biography (150 words maximum)
- Detailed curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum)
- One reference letter from a professional in their field. The referee should outline why the applicant should participate in a residency with Fogo Island Arts.
In the SlideRoom portal, applicants will be asked to provide the name and contact information of a referee. They will receive an email asking them to upload their letter of recommendation directly to SlideRoom.
And, where relevant provide samples of work:
- Maximum 8 images (up to 5MB each) in JPEG format, with relevant caption information included
- Maximum 2 videos (up to 250MB each) or 2 links to video for film related submissions
