Tina’s Gas Bar

Ethan Murphy’s work Tina’s Gas Bar is part of a larger photographic series that poses a question concerning optimism, asking viewers to engage in self-reflection about their futures on the island of Newfoundland. The series examines individuals whose efforts cultivate self-sufficient ways of life and sustainable practices while simultaneously pointing toward abandoned industry and resource extraction in the province. Tina’s Gas Bar is an example of Mom-and-Pop corner stores and gas bars, referencing oil and gas industries that play a key role in the stability of employment for the people in the province. The gas guzzling truck is the archetypal vehicle of the working class who rely on the prosperity of oil. Not only are these boom-and-bust cycles unsustainable economically but they are also environmentally disruptive.
