Fogo Island Arts is pleased to announce a new presentation of Belonging to a Place: An Exhibition by Fogo Island Arts at the Art Gallery of the Embassy of Canada in Washington, DC. Belonging to a Place features works by a selection of international artists who are alumni or forthcoming participants of the Fogo Island Arts residency program.
First presented at Scrap Metal gallery in Toronto from June 22 to September 23, 2017, Belonging to a Place is a unique collaboration between Art en Valise, Fogo Island Arts, and Scrap Metal. These three Canadian organizations came together to realize a poetic, forward-thinking project based on shared values. The presentation at the Embassy of Canada is a new iteration of the project, featuring selections from the original exhibition as well as additional artists and works.
The exhibition departs from a consideration of the concept of “place,” seeking to examine where we come from and how we relate to multiple notions of belonging. Presenting sculpture, installation, video, painting and works on paper, the exhibition takes on a diverse, experimental and critical approach to contemporary art, its presentation and discussion.
Belonging to a Place is curated by Nicolaus Schafhausen, Director, Kunsthalle Wien and Strategic Director, Fogo Island Arts, and features works by Abbas Akhavan (IR/CA), Nadia Belerique (CA), Mark Clintberg (CA), Brenda Draney (CA), Aslan Gaisumov (CHE), Ieva Epnere (LV), Steffen Jagenburg (DE), Leon Kahane (DE), Isa Melsheimer (DE), Kate Newby (NZ), Silke Otto-Knapp (US/DE), Paul P. (CA), Joseph del Pesco (US), Jeroen de Rijke & Willem de Rooij (NL), and Zin Taylor (CA/FR).
