Sharon Lockhart
Sharon Lockhart (Born 1964) is an American artist living and working in Los Angeles. In a diverse practice that includes installation, photography, film, painting and sculpture, Lockhart creates compelling and complex interactions between the various media and forms she employs, histories she encounters, and the communities and people she collaborates with.
About the Artist
In 2017, Lockhart represented Poland at the 57th Venice Biennale with her multidisciplinary project, Little Review. Solo exhibitions include: Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Augarten, Vienna; The Jewish Museum, New York; Contemporary Art Center, Vilnius, Lithuania; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Fonzadione Fotografia Modena, Italy; Museu Colecção Berardo, Lisbon, Portugal; and Kunstmuseum Luzern, Switzerland. Lockhart’s films have been presented in the New York Film Festival, Vienna International Film Festival, FID Marseille, Berlin Film Festival, and Sundance Film Festival. Lockhart has been awarded the Herb Alpert Award, Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, D.A.A.D. Artist in Residence Fellowship, Berlin, Mike Kelly Foundation Artist Project Grant, and a Radcliffe Fellowship at Harvard University, among others.nnSharon Lockhart is an American artist whose work considers social subjects primarily through motion film and still photography, often engaging with communities to create work as part of long-term projects. She received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1991 and her MFA from Art Center College of Design in 1993.
She has been a Radcliffe fellow, a Guggenheim fellow, and a Rockefeller fellow. Her films and photographic work have been widely exhibited at international film festivals and in museums, cultural institutions, and galleries around the world. She was an associate professor at the University of Southern California’s Roski School of Fine Arts, resigning from the school in August 2015 in response to the continued administrative turmoil at Roski to take a position at the California Institute for the Arts
Sharon’s works include Goshogaoka Girls Basketball Team (1998), Teatro Amazonas (1999), NŌ (2003), Duane Hanson works, Pine Flat (2006), Lunch Break (2008), Podwórka (2009), Sharon Lockhart/Noa Eshkol (2011), Rudzienko and further work in Poland (2013-ongoing).
