Sonia Leimer

About the Curator

Born in Merano in 1977, Sonia Leimer studied Architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She taught at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (2012–17) and Installation and Art at the at the ETH Zürich, department Architecture and Art with Karin Sander (2017/2018) and at the Cooper Union in New York in collaboration with architect Alessandra Cianchetta (2019). Her institutional solo exhibitions include Sonia Leimer at the Charles Jencks Foundation, London, (2024); Space Dust, Heldenplatz Wien, (2024), Eroberung des Nutzlosen at Neuer Kunstverein Wien, Vienna (2022); Via San Gennaro at MAN_ Museo d’Arte Provincia di Nuoro, Sardinia (2021); KOW, Berlin (2021); Space Junk at Museion, Bolzano (2020); Via San Gennaro at ISCP, International Studio & Curatorial Program, New York City (2019); Autoterritorium at Galerie im Taxispalais, Innsbruck (2017); LAMOA Los Angeles Museum of Art (2014); Museion, Bozen (2012); MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles (2012); Kunstverein Basis, Frankfurt/Main (2011); BAWAG Contemporary, Vienna (2010); and Salzburger Kunstverein, Salzburg (2010). 

Recently she won the art in public space competition on Heldenplatz in Vienna (2023), she was one of the Winners of the IV edition of the Italian Council, promoted by Directorate-General for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Peripheries, Rome (2018), she received the Quivid First Prize, Art in public space, Munich (2017), the Paul Flora Prize (2011), and the Audi Award, New Positions, Cologne (2011). Sonia Leimer lives and works in Vienna, Austria 

Leimer works with film, sculpture and installation to interrogate categories of space and time. Her works have been exhibited at Manifesta 7, Rovereto, Italy; the 6th Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art, Russia, the 17th Venice Architecture Biennial, Italy, as well as at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Salzburger Kunstverein and the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles.
