About this Guided Tour

Miguel Fernández de Castro's When eyes come down from the hills
Fogo Island Gallery | April 3 - October 31, 2026
Open Daily | 11 AM - 4 PM

This exhibition brings together photographs, documents, video, and objects, some made and some found by the artist over the past four years in Mexico’s Gran Altar Desert — a landscape marked by smuggling routes, criminal networks, military patrols, and extractive industry. What holds Fernández de Castro’s works together is a sustained exploration of the act of observation. His work asks to consider who is watching, from where, and why?

Video Screening every Thursday from 2 - 3 PM

Screening in the Cinema upstairs, a video Fernández de Castro made in collaboration with ejidatarios — members of a communal land system — on plots recovered from illegal mining operations completes the exhibition’s arc. The video is 9 minutes long and plays on a loop. No reservation required.

Artist Miguel Fernández de Castro works out of Altar in Mexico's Sonoran Desert. He blends lived experience, conflict, and ecological thought into a single, slow observational method. Concrete details, from carved marks on a wooden stool to the flaming crown of a saguaro, provide conceptual anchors for thinking about territory, conflict and memory.
