With our new program, Institute of the Cold, Fogo Island Arts invites writers, visual artists, composers and other creative people to spend the month of March on Fogo Island. This residency is for those who are inspired by windy and wintery places. People who like thinking and working when the North Atlantic is a foreboding dark ocean.
Each resident will live and work in one of Fogo Island's traditional oceanside saltbox homes. There is no dedicated studio; the work happens outside as much as inside: walking in the winter wind, watching a storm arrive across land and open water, feeling the light shift from flat grey to brilliant sunshine and back again.
FIA residencies are for professional practitioners with specialized training, recognition among their peers and a history of public presentation of their work. Applications are welcome from artists working across a wide range of disciplines, including visual art, film, critical writing, sound, curating, design and theory.
A driver's license is required.
The cost of the program is CAD $1,400, which includes private accommodation and use of a vehicle. You are responsible for your flight to Gander, Newfoundland, and expenses such as food and gas.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted using the SlideRoom online portal. Step-by-step application instructions are available on the portal. Applicants will receive a confirmation email once their application has been completed.
Application Criteria
The deadline is August 14, 2026, and applicants will be asked to submit the following:
- Application form
- Brief description of their practice and current project
- Short biography
- Curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum)
- Name and contact information for two referees
And, where relevant, provide samples of work:
- Maximum 12 images (up to 5MB each) in JPEG format, with relevant caption information included
- Maximum 2 videos (up to 250MB each) or 2 links to video for film-related submissions
- 1-3 samples of published writing (up to 10 pages total)
